Helpful Tips for Managing Diabetes During the Holiday Season

Managing diabetes ultimately comes down to managing the foods (and drinks) we consume.

And around this time of year, that's especially important to remember. Whether you have type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, or prediabetes, the way we can all win is by being cognizant of our food and drink choices. Always remember: it's carbs

It can be very hard to resist the copious amount of carbs that pile up during all the winter holiday festivities. What's the secret?

  • Enjoy carbs in moderation.

Carbs will be abundant at every party! Know this going into each get-together. This isn't your last chance to stock up on candy canes or dinner rolls! Choose your carb intake accordingly, knowing that low carb is always the best option your best health.

  • Check blood sugars more.

Even if you're not giving in to the carbs at the parties, there are still other variables that can affect your blood glucose levels. Maybe it's all the socializing or the late nights, but these parties can throw your daily regimen off-kilter. And that's OK! Just keep an eye on blood sugars by checking more than usual (even if you wear a CGM!).
  • Keep moving.

Just because it's the most wonderful time of the year doesn't mean you shouldn't get outside or on your treadmill to break a sweat a day. Even if you can't get in your 10,000 steps for the day, sweating it out for 20 minutes will benefit your day's blood sugars. Then, you can't get right back to enjoying quality time on the couch!

These are just a few of the many tips & tricks we've used to handle our own blood glucose levels throughout the holidays season!
