Meet Charles

Charles King, 71, is blind. He also happens to have type 2 diabetes. What he lacks in vision and pancreas function, he makes up for in strength. Quite literally.

He’s the oldest blind powerlifter in the United States and has multiple gold medals to his name as a member of the United States Association of Blind Athletes (USABA).

“I can’t see the world, but I’m being all I can be in the world,” he explains.

Thanks to the USABA, Charles and other people who are blind and visually impaired are able to participate in sports, recreation, and other physical activities.

Donate to the USABA to help provide life-changing opportunities to people who are blind and visually impaired, and to help change society’s negative stereotypes about the abilities of differently abled people.

Portraits of Possible

Health—like life itself—is an ongoing journey.

Portraits of Possible highlights health stories that show how everyday people reimagine their health, their limits, and their life. It showcases the power of self-care, self-discovery, and saying “yes” even when change feels a little scary.

Portraits of Possible demonstrates that we all have the potential to turn challenges into possibilities and live a life without limits, no matter the odds.

Athlete Takes Big Step Forward Without Legs

SaraMae, a longtime runner, lost her legs due to a septic infection. After nearly losing her life as well, she focused on what she had—rather than on what was missing—to redefine herself as an athlete. First, she focused on healing her mind. Next, she focused on healing her body. Along the way, she discovered a beautiful kind of “freedom” that revealed itself not in the legs she was born with, but in two prosthetic legs.
