What Is A Chaffle?
Quite simply, it’s a low carb waffle. Standard waffles are made of batter that consists of flour, butter, brown sugar, yeast, and milk, which translates to a ton of carbohydrates and sugar.
The chaffle, on the other hand, has virtually no carbs. In its most simple form, the chaffle is made of just cheese and eggs.
Think you can’t have waffles and eat them, too, because of a low carb lifestyle? Not anymore. The chaffle (cheese waffle) lets you have all of the waffle goodness you could ever want without the carbs. Using just cheese (a bland version) and eggs, you’ll get the same thick, textured, golden-crisp taste and feel.
Given the ingredients, you might think the chaffle only exists in cheddar form. And while there are certainly plenty of cheddar chaffle variations, there are also plenty of sweet chaffle recipes. You can play up the savory flavor and use these as bread substitutions (they work great as buns for your sandwich or burger!), or you can go all-in on the sweet and use chaffles as your Saturday morning waffle alternative.
Generally speaking, it only takes about 10 minutes to make a chaffle. You’ll need a waffle maker for all chaffle recipes, and some sort of cheese and egg combo. Depending on how you want to use your chaffle (as a savory, cheesy, melt-in-your-mouth bread alternative or as a sweet, fluffy, cake-battered waffle look-alike), there are tons of recipes to try!
