Understanding “HIGH” and “LOW” readings on your One Drop glucose meter

Please reference the descriptions below to understand HIGH and LOW readings on your One Drop glucose meter.

Note: before taking a reading, ensure that your One Drop test strips are stored properly and they are not past their expiration date, as these can cause false results.

To properly store your test strips, place them in an airtight container and store them in a cool, dry place at 46°F to 86°F (8°C to 30°C) and at a relative humidity of 10% to 90%. Exposure to light, oxygen, humidity, and fluctuating temperatures can cause damage to test strips and result in false readings.

HIGH meter reading: A high reading is a blood sugar reading with your One Drop glucose meter that is greater than 600 mg/dL. This reading may indicate extra hyperglycemia (very high blood sugar).

If you are experiencing no symptoms of extra hyperglycemia, but you’ve received a very high reading: Wash your hands and then retest with a new test strip. If you still get a high test result, follow the treatment plan recommended by your healthcare team or contact your healthcare professional for assistance.

If you feel that your results do not match how you are feeling, contact your doctor or nurse.

If you are experiencing symptoms of extra hyperglycemia: Follow your healthcare professional’s instructions for treating high blood sugars or contact your healthcare team immediately. Symptoms include fatigue, thirst, excessive urination, or blurry vision.

Very high blood sugars may require medical assistance. If ketones are present, follow the instructions from your doctor. Here is more information on diabetes ketoacidosis.

LOW meter reading: A low reading is a blood sugar reading with your One Drop glucose meter that is lower than 20 mg/dL. This reading may indicate extreme hypoglycemia (very low blood sugar).

If you are experiencing no symptoms of extreme hypoglycemia, but you’ve received a low blood sugar reading: Wash your hands and retest with a new test strip. If you still get a low test result, follow the treatment plan recommended by your healthcare team or contact your healthcare professional immediately.

If you are experiencing symptoms of extreme hypoglycemia: Immediately follow the treatment plan for low blood sugar recommended by your healthcare provider or contact your healthcare professional. Symptoms include weakness, sweating, nervousness, headache, and/or confusion.

Very low blood sugar readings may require medical assistance, including oral glucose or glucagon kit. For oral glucose, consider eating 15 - 30 grams of rapid-acting carbohydrate(s) and then monitor blood sugars appropriately.

Here is more information on how to handle low blood sugars.
